Creation Myth

Poem and Choreography
by Anita-Cristina Calcaterra
This dance is
measured by the spoken word. Each movement in parenthesis below the line of the
poem begins when that line is spoken and is done continuously until the next
line is spoken. The dancer(s) may move around and move their arms as they
choose to interpret the line of the poem.

In the beginning, was
the void
(horizontal hip circle)
It held all and nothing
(horizontal hip circle) |
 |
|
Then there was
movement
(horizontal heart circle)
The movement became breath
(vertical heart circle)
And the breath became song
(sagittal heart circle) |
 |
In the beginning,
was The Mother
(horizontal hip crescent, in front)
She nourished and fed.
(vertical heart crescent, on top)
She cradled and rocked
(horizontal heart crescent, in back) |
 |
In the beginning,
were the waters
(horizontal hip figure eight, inward)
Rocking, nourishing, feeding
(vertical heart figure eight)
Rocked, nourished, fed
(horizontal hip figure eight, reverse direction)
|
 |
From the rocking and the song came the foam
(earthquake shimmy)From the foam came the tides
(twisting shimmy)
From the tides came the laughter
(heart shimmy) |
 |
In the beginning,
She laughed
(heart shimmy)And then came the birth
(the wave)
Ah, then came the birth
(ecstasy shimmy)
Of a void full of flowing
(the snake) |
